Setting the Spark 2022

We’ve been working with Redruth School and Redruth RFC to reconstruct and revive the ancient Cornish sport of ‘Hurling to Goal’ and we’ll be hosting the ‘Hurling to Goal’ tournament (free entry to all) on Saturday 28th May at Redruth Rugby Club, played by pupils from Redruth School.

The first hurl begins at 3pm and the hurling matches will be followed by a procession of the glorious champions and their crews of supporters around the town.

Come along, witness the spectacle of the tournament, join in with the celebrations and cheer on your Crew! Angel, Tormentor, Demon or Saint – which are you?!

The colourful Crews of Angels, Demons, Tormentors and Saints, hailing from four quarters of the town, will support their team with chants and ‘garm vresel’ / battle cry style encouragements – gathering 1pm-2pm at Crew HQs across the town, to ready themselves. Drop-in to your crew’s HQ to join in and grab your colours before heading to the Rugby Club, for the first hurl at 3pm.

Angel, Demon, Tormentor or Saint – Which Hellfire crew do you belong to?

Where you live determines which Hellfire crew you’re part of, and which team you’ll be supporting. The Redruth ‘Quarters’ are centred on the crossroads at Fore St, Penryn St, West End and Chapel St with the divisions based on the medieval ‘hundreds’ of Cornwall.

DEMONS

In the North, Demons reside in the old hundred of ‘Pydar’ – everything East of Chapel St/Tolgus Hill/B3300 and North of Fore St/Higher Fore St/East End. The Demons’ division includes North Country, Treleigh, Porthtowan and the Parish of St Agnes. The Demons will be gathering at Hellfire Corner from 1pm to ready themselves before the hurl at 3pm.

ANGELS

The Angels live in the old hundred of ‘Powder’ South of Fore St/Higher Fore St/East End and East of Penryn St/Falmouth Rd/Southgate St/A393. The area the angels occupy includes Treskerby, Albany Rd, Park Rd and  the Parishes of Chacewater, St Day, Carharrack, Gwennap (north of A393). The Angels will assemble 1pm-2pm at The Buttermarket on the day.

SAINTS

South of the Fore Street/West End crossroads, the Saints dwell west of Penryn St/Falmouth Rd/Southgate St/A393 and south of West End/Blowinghouse Hill/ Agar Road/Fore St Pool. The land of the saints includes Trewirgie, Carnkie, Four Lanes, Trevingey and the Parishes of Lanner (south of A393), Stithians and Wendron, falling into the old hundred of ‘Kerrier’. The Saints will congregate in St Rumon’s Gardens at 1pm before the hurling begins at 3pm – seek them out to join the crew before the tournament.

TORMENTORS

The Tormentors occupy the area north of West End/Blowinghouse Hill/ Agar Road/Fore St Pool and west of Chapel St/Tolgus Hill/B3300. The Tormentors territory includes the old hundred of ‘Penwith’ encompassing Barncoose, Pool (North), Tehidy and the Parishes of Camborne, Illogan, Portreath. Find the Tormentors at Redruth Community Centre preparing before the first hurl at 3pm.

We are ‘Setting the Spark’ in 2022 with our ‘Hellfire Kernow’ events, funded by Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grants and Redruth Unlimited – a new cultural adventure for Redruth. Read more on our project page here.
