Did you know that medieval Cornwall was the centre of a vibrant and unique theatre culture?
Spectacular, outdoor performances lasting for several days were once staged, immersing the whole community in a celebration of the lives of Cornish saints or illuminating religious stories.
Two well-known examples of ⊠Plen an Gwari (Cornish amphitheatres) survive at St Just & Perran Round. However, more than 30 other sites have now been located.
Thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, we have been researching and celebrating these ‘lost’ Plen an Gwari sites and helping to uncover the amazing treasure of Cornwall’s theatrical heritage.
