Hilary grew up at Calstock on the Tamar River. As a teenager she rowed at regattas where she soaked up Cornwall’s pub singing tradition. At school in Callington she learnt the clarinet and took singing lessons.

She trained in residential care and drama therapy, and worked with several theatre companies in Cornwall including Kneehigh. She combined her love of drama and music with her interest in community work running workshops for all ages and abilities.

Over the years Hilary has co-founded the bands Gwaryoryon, Sowena and Dalla who have toured, recorded and represented Cornwall in other Celtic countries. She enjoys writing, researching and arranging Cornish music including using the language. This year she will be producing a new book, Shout Kernow, about Cornish pub singing.

Hilary was barded in 2004 for her services to Cornish music and took the name Atamiores meaning pioneer.
